Monks & Blue Jays Spar to 1-1 Deadlock

WEST HARTFORD, CT – Saint Joseph's (6-4-1, 4-4-1 GNAC) and St. Joseph (CT) (10-1-1, 6-1-1 GNAC) dueled to a 1-1 deadlock in GNAC Women's Soccer action on Monday afternoon. Monks goalkeeper Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, ME) made five saves over 110 minutes of play.

Elizabeth Theberge '11 (Danvers, MA) ended a Monks scoring drought that spanned over 211 minutes and included 29 shots on the team's first attempt of the game at the 2:37 mark. The Theberge marker came off a direct kick and clanged off the crossbar into the net to lift the visitors to a 1-0 cushion.

The 1-0 lead stood for nearly 55 minutes of play, a span in which the Blue Jays forced Lorenzen to make four saves and found the frame of the net on one occasion. Nicole Mendelson knotted the match at one-all with her third goal of the year, which came off a direct kick 23 yards out.

Saint Joseph's had several opportunities during the closing minutes of regulation play, but two shots sailed wide and the Monks failed to take advantage of a pair of corner kicks in the final three minutes.

The Royal Blue continued to put the pressure on the Blue Jays during the extra frames as well, but St. Joseph (CT) keeper Holly Mirabella, who made six stops for the hosts, was able to preserve the tie with three saves during the OT periods.

The Blue Jays held slight advantages in shots (12-11) and corner kicks (8-5) in the conference stalemate.

Saint Joseph's is now 3-0-1 against St. Joseph (CT) in the history of the series.

The Monks will host Husson University in a non-conference contest on Thursday at 4:00 PM, while St. Joseph (CT) will play at Mitchell College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
