Women's Soccer Defeated by Husson on Opening Day, 2-0

BANGOR, ME – Saint Joseph's (0-1) suffered a 2-0 setback at the hands of Husson University (1-0) in non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday afternoon. Monks netminder Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, Maine) registered four saves in the match, which was the season-opener for both sides.

The Eagles held the ball for the majority of the first half and outshot the guests by a 7-3 margin in the opening frame. Marcella Francoeur (Danville, N.H.) found the back of the net first, with 12:24 remaining in the first half, taking advantage of a nifty left-to-right cross from Kelsey Brangiel (Newmarket, N.H.) to put the hosts on top.

Alexandra Laniewski (Scarborough, Maine) tallied her first goal of the season about six minutes later when she extended the Eagles' advantage to two goals on a strike from the right side after showing some speed to find space. Husson maintained the pressure until the final buzzer and came through with the win.

First-year keeper Jessica Poulin (Albion, Maine) recorded a shutout in her first career start for the Eagles, with five saves on the afternoon.

The young St. Joe's side fought hard and generated chances to come back in the second half but was unable to solve the Eagles' rookie keeper.

For the Monks, Katherine Chambers '13 (Hampden, Maine) and Katelyn Call '12 (Portland, Maine/McAuley) recorded a pair of shots – both on goal – apiece in the loss. Kelsea Ardine-Marchand '14 (Boscawen, N.H.) also steered a shot on target for Saint Joseph's.

With the loss, St. Joe's falls to 29-6 in the history of the series with Husson, a former conference opponent. The setback is the third consecutive at the hands of the Eagles and counts as the third time the Monks have been held scoreless by a Husson side.

Saint Joseph's has not been shut out in a season-opener since Wheaton College defeated the Royal Blue by a 4-0 tally on August 31st, 2008.

The Monks will hit the pitch next Thursday, September 8th when the team travels to Thomas College for a non-conference tilt slated to begin at 4:00 PM. Husson will host Emmanuel College on Saturday at 9:30 AM in the Second Annual Husson Classic.
