NEWTON, Mass. – A pair of goals less than twenty seconds apart to open the second half broke a scoreless tie and propelled Saint Joseph's College (ME) to a 3-1 victory over Mount Ida in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Mount Ida freshman Michelle Cicalese (Mount Olive, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal but the Mustangs dropped to 6-5 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Saint Joseph's improves to 7-4-1 and 3-3-1 in the conference behind two goals from sophomore Hannah Butler (Melrose, Mass.).
Butler's first goal was the second in quick succession for the Monks, after Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) opened the scoring, tapping in her eighth goal of the year just seconds after halftime. The team played to a scoreless draw in the first half, despite an 8-1 advantage in shots for the visitors.
Butler made the lead 3-0 just over the half hour mark with her third goal of the season.
Cicalese got Mount Ida on the scoreboard with two minutes left to play, capitalizing off of a free kick shot by Bailey Elliot (Tolland, Conn.).
Elliot's shot hit off of the post and came to Cicalese, who slammed it into the back of the net, past Madi Day (Hiram, Maine), who came on in relief of Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.).
Troup made four saves for the Monks, while Mount Ida sophomore AnnaMarie Seiler (Biddeford, Maine) made six stops while playing the first three-quarters of the game. Kelsey Parkin (Standish, Maine) made a save and didn't allow a goal in fifteen minutes of relief.
Mount Ida continues GNAC play this weekend with a pivotal game against Emmanuel in Boston. Kick-off is set for 3:00 pm on Saturday.
The Monks host Rivier at 4:00 pm the same day.
