USM Wins Queenan Memorial, Caron Takes Top Individual Honors

CASCO, Maine – University of Southern Maine posted a 320 team card to capture top honors at the 12th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's College at Point Sebago Golf Resort on Tuesday.

Saint Joseph's sophomore Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) shot an even-par 72 to lead all participants and collect his second-consecutive medalist award. Caron, who won the Thomas College Classic at Waterville Country Club on Sunday, finished as the top individual in last year's Queenan Tournament and is first player in tourney history to claim back-to-back medalist accolades in the event. His 72 card is the best since Brent Profenno shot a 71 in taking top honors in 2007.

For the Huskies, the win at Queenan is the program's first since 2004 when USM shot a 306 and edged Saint Joseph's by a stroke in the second occurrence of the event. Husson University – which did not compete in this year's tourney – finished as the top team in eight of the last nine Queenan events.

Saint Joseph's finished as the runner-up, well behind the Huskies with a 344 collective card, while University of New England (351), Maine-Farmington (354) and Thomas College (386) rounded out the list of competing institutions.

Individually, John Gagliano (Windham, Maine) of Southern Maine was the runner-up with a 76 score while Huskies linkers Tom Murray (Bangor, Maine) and Jordan Rouillard (Waterford, N.Y.) finished in a tie for third with an 81 card. Huskies sophomore Spencer Plante (Springvale, Maine) was fourth (83) while USM sophomore Alex Carroll (Searsport, Maine), UNE freshman Ben McCollough (Columbus, Ohio) and UMF freshman Galvin Brickley finished tied for fourth with an 84 effort.

For the Monks, junior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) shot an 86, freshman Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) posted a 92, junior Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) carded a 94 and junior Brendan Woelfel (Lowell, Mass.) tallied a 106 score.

The yearly tournament is named in memory of John Queenan, a 2003 graduate of Bow High School who died tragically in an automobile accident just prior to the beginning of his freshman year at Saint Joseph's.

St. Joe's returns to action this Friday with an appearance in the Southern Maine Cup at Gorham Country Club.
