Monks win Southern Maine Cup

Monks win Southern Maine Cup

PORTLAND, Maine – Freshmen Caleb Campos (Port Charlotte, Fla.) and Braden Camire (Saco, Maine) combined to shoot a seven-under par 65 to earn Medalist honors and lift the Monks to a top finish with a 209 (-7) team score in the 2023 Southern Maine Cup, which was hosted at Riverside Golf Course on Saturday.

For the Monks, the 209 card is tied for the lowest recorded by an SJC team in the annual scramble event. The 2018 club also shot a 209 and placed second that year.

A unique event, the Southern Maine cup features a Ryder Cup format with pairs of golfers playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble format and finally six holes of alternate shot golf.

For the Monks, the USM Cup victory is the program's sixth overall and marks the team's second-consecutive title. Saint Joseph's also won the scramble tournament in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2022.

Juniors Drew Mathieu (Windham, Maine) and Alex Beecher (South Portland, Maine) combined to post a 71 (-1) and tied for fourth while sophomores Nick DeLeo (Saco, Maine) and Dante Ceppetelli (Dover, N.H.) tied for seventh with a 73 (+1).

Matthew Burnham (Berwick, Maine) and Bob Gerossie (Fremont, N.H.) played as a non-scoring pairing and shot an 83 (+11).

University of Southern Maine finished as the runner-up with a 213 (-3), University of New England placed third (218 (+2)), and UMaine-Farmington was fourth (227 (+11)).

Saint Joseph's will next play in the UMF Invitational at the Waterville Country Club next Saturday.
