Flanagan and Mathieu Claim CSC At-Large Academic All-District® Awards

STANDISH, Maine – The 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams have been announced and a pair of Saint Joseph's College men's golfers have earned honors.

Senior Trevor Flanagan (Monmouth, Maine) and sophomore Drew Mathieu (Windham, Maine) have claimed the high academic accolade for the first time.

To be nominated for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games/events. Student-athletes are not eligible until they have completed one full calendar year at their current institution and been on a college roster in that sport for two years.

Flanagan and Mathieu have played significant roles in helping the Monks claim back-to-back Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships and, subsequently, NCAA Tournament berths.

Mathieu, a Finance & Accounting major, was the top finisher in the 2021 and 2022 title tournaments en route to collecting a pair of GNAC Golfer of the Year honors. He was also named as the 2021 GNAC Rookie of the Year.

Flanagan, a team captain and Pre-Med major, claimed four Medalist titles, was picked as the conference golfer of the week three times, earned All-Conference honors, and posted the fifth-best round average (75.2) in program history during his senior season.

The CSC Academic All-District® At-Large program recognizes athletes from 22 different sports, including men's and women's programs for fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, water polo as well as men's volleyball, men's wrestling, women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, field hockey, and women's rowing.

The 2023 Academic All-District® Men's & Women's At-Large Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.

Eight other SJC athletes have claimed Academic All-District accolades within the Men's & Women's At-Large program: men's lacrosse seniors Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) and Ethan Richard (Litchfield, Maine) and sophomore Anthony Samiotes (Hampstead, N.H.), women's lacrosse players Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) and Tara Powers (Tyngsboro, Mass.), and field hockey standouts Molly McCluskey (Orono, Maine), Anna Walker (Scarborough, Maine), and Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine).

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 21. The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed at the link below.

The Division II and III CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
