Monks in Second at Maine Championship after 18 Holes

LEEDS, Maine – Reigning State Champion Saint Joseph's College sits in second place with a 307-team card after the first day of the 2016 Maine Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship, which is being played at the Springbrook Golf Club.

Saint Joseph's trails Husson University (303) by four strokes as the Eagles' score is buoyed by an outstanding round from sophomore Dalton Wickenden, who shot a four-under 67 to lead all participants through 18 holes.

Senior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) is currently in second with a 72 while sophomores Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) and Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) both carded a 77 and are tied for 11th with five others.

Sophomore Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) and junior Brandon Lebrecque (Gorham, Maine) both shot an 81 on the first day.

Overall, six teams are within 10 strokes of the top slot through 18 holes, with Saint Joseph's, Bates College (310), University of Southern Maine (311), Maine-Farmington (311), University of New England (312), and Bowdoin College (313) all within striking distance heading into day two.

Colby College (322), Maine Maritime (341), and Thomas College (392) round out the day one scores of the group of 10 Maine institutions competing in this year's championship.
