STANDISH, Maine – For the first time in program history, members of the Saint Joseph's College golf team will travel to Florida during the college's spring break.
The timing of the team's first southern swing could not be better, as the SJC linkers look to regain their form in preparation for the NCAA DIII Championship, which begins on May 16th at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. Saint Joseph's earned the program's first-ever automatic berth into the NCAA DIII Championship after winning the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title at the Gorham Country Club last fall.
The Monks depart for Orlando on Saturday, March 4th and, under the watch of Head Coach Jamie Smyth '92 and alum Matt Cotreau '10, will play three practice rounds – including two at Mission Inn Resort – with a pair of competitive matches. A trip to the World Golf Hall of Fame is also on the docket.
"This is a great opportunity for our program to get prepared for the NCAA National tournament this spring," adds Coach Smyth. "We are planning on making this a trip a bi-annual event to reward the players for their hard work throughout their golf careers."
After two days of practice rounds, Saint Joseph's faces off against a familiar foe – Husson University – at the Heritage Harbor Country Club in Tampa on Tuesday, March 7th. The following day, the Monks play their last practice round at Mission Inn Resort and on March 9th the team treks to the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine.
On Friday, March 10th Saint Joseph's takes on Coastal Georgia University at Jekyll Island Country Club in Jekyll Island, Georgia. The Monks head back north the following day.
