SJC Men Sweep, Women Place Second in 2024 Opener at Black Mountain

RUMFORD, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College alpine ski teams kicked off the 2024 season with a slalom race at Black Mountain on Sunday. The SJC men swept the podium to eclipse the field with the minimum six-point total and a 4:21.86 composite time while the Monks women finished second with 12 points and a 4:56.15 total time in the season opener.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

The SJC women's team posted the fewest points (12) but lost out via composite time to UMaine-Farmington, which totaled 13 points and claimed the victory with a 4:53.76 – 4:56.16 total time lead.

The Beavers placed the top two finishers as Elanore Robb won the race with a 1:34.76 (47.24, 47.52) performance and Hokulani Caroselli was close behind with a 1:35.08 (47.01, 48.07) time. SJC junior Madelyn Zordan (New Hartford, Conn.) was third with a 1:35.15 (46.81, 48.34) effort.

UMaine-Orono placed third with 28 points while Bowdoin (49), New England College (54), Bates (87), and Colby (87) also raced in the 2024 opener.

FOR THE MONKS:

  • Zordan notched her ninth podium finish after placing third with a 1:35.15 (46.81, 48.34) effort
  • Senior Courtney Pingree (Marblehead, Mass.) finished sixth with a 1:40.04 (50.70, 49.34) time
  • Senior Erica Irvin (Windham, N.H.) was seventh (1:40.96, 50.93 / 50.03)
  • Senior Maeghan Perkins (Turner, Maine) placed eighth with a 1:41.04 (50.69, 50.35) performance
  • Sophomore Sienna Mack (Lincoln, N.H.) was 11th (1:42.87, 51.93 / 50.94)
  • Freshman Lily Anctil (Greene, Maine) finished 16th (1:46.26, 53.56 / 52.70)
  • Junior Lillian Souweine (Bangor, Maine) placed 18th (1:48.81, 53.25 / 55.56)
  • Freshman Meghan Cyr (Hampden, Maine) was 24th (2:04.24, 1:08.25 / 55.99)
  • Freshman Hannah Golden (Concord, N.H.) finished 27th (2:20.77, 1:24.75 / 56.02)

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:

Sophomore Jack Price (Franconia, N.H.), senior Liam Strobeck (Charlotte, Vt.), and junior Jacob Morris (Woodstock, N.H.) placed first, second, and third – respectively - to give the Monks a podium sweep for the second time in program history. Strobeck, Price, and Caleb Gorton (Goffstown, N.H.) comprised the first trifecta at Lost Valley last winter (1/20/23).

UMaine-Farmington placed the fourth, sixth, and seventh participants and finished in a distant second with 17 points and a 4:28.43 total time.

FOR THE MONKS:

  • Price earned the second victory of his college career with a 1:26.75 time after placing second (42.88) on the first run and third (43.87) on the second trek
  • Strobeck notched the 21st podium finish of his career and placed second with a 1:27.53 (42.49, 45.04) composite time
  • Morris posted his second career podium with a third-place effort and 1:27.58 time after finishing third (44.20) on the opening run and first (43.38) on the closing race
  • Sophomore Logan Davis (Naples, Maine) was fifth with a 1:28.73 (44.25, 44.48) effort
  • Gorton finished 13th (1:30.49, 45.54 / 44.95)
  • Sophomore Colin Rathbone (Groton, Mass.) placed 23rd (1:35.45, 46.95 / 48.50)
  • Freshman Sam Plummer (Raymond, Maine) was 25th (1:37.22, 49.26 / 47.96)
  • Freshman Charlie Pye (Rangely, Maine) finished 39th (2:01.07, 54.68 / 1:06.39)

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's is back in action next weekend with races at Sunday River on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's giant slalom event starts at 10:00 AM and the slalom race is set for a 10:00 AM start on Sunday.
