PROVIDENCE, RI - Saint Joseph's (16-17, 4-8 GNAC) split a conference tri-match with Pine Manor (1-21, 0-12 GNAC) and Johnson & Wales (21-14, 11-1 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Monks topped the Gators, 25-12, 25-19, 25-9 in the opener before falling to the Wildcats, 25-14, 25-21, 25-14 in the nightcap.
With the split, St. Joe's closes out the 2009 campaign with the best record since the Monks went 20-14 in 1997, Head Coach John Razsa's last year of his first stint at Saint Joseph's.
Against Pine Manor, Hawkes recorded 14 kills and an astounding .650 attack percentage and Kiah Begley '13 (Berwick, ME/St. Thomas Aquinas) had 22 assists.
In the losing effort to Johnson & Wales, Caitlin Cleary '13 (Scarborough, ME) netted 10 digs and 7 kills, Hawkes collected 7 kills, 7 digs and 3 total blocks and Begley had 16 assists and 7 digs.
Although the Monks narrowly missed making the GNAC playoffs for the first time, there is plenty to rave about with this 2009 squad.
Hawkes completes her rookie campaign as the new single-season record holder in kills (325), kills per set (2.95), attack percentage (.280) and total blocks and Begley obliterated the mark for assists (703) in a season. Cleary and Hawkes are the only two players in the last 10 years to reach 200 kills and 200 digs in a campaign and the Cleary-Hawkes-Begley trio is the first trifecta attain at least 200 digs apiece at Saint Joseph's.
