STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College (7-4) capped a 4-0 weekend by defeating Green Mountain College (2-4) in five sets in the SJC Autumn Invitational Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center. Caitlin Cleary '13 (Scarborough, ME) recorded a double-double with 29 digs and 12 kills in the title match and garnered Tournament MVP honors.

St. Joe's sophomore Kaleigh McHale (Dracut, MA) was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Emma Brinley Buckley '10 (Lakeville, CT) and Melanie Rodriguez '11 (Hoboken, NJ) from Green Mountain. Elisa Boyd '13 (Anniston, AL) of Maine-Machias and Morgan Reilly '10 (Whittier, CA) of Lyndon State also were named to the All-Tournament Team.

CHAMPIONSHIP

The Eagles fought valiantly in the title match, despite falling to the Monks 3-0 in a game on Friday night.

Despite falling 3-0 to the Royal Blue on Friday night, the Eagles gave the Monks all they could handle in the title match. St. Joe's trailed 2-1 (18-25, 25-21, 19-25) after three sets, but finished strong with 25-14 and 15-5 victories in the final two sets to collect the championship.

The win was a team effort for St. Joe's, as three different players notched at least 10 kills and six registered 10 or more digs. Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, ME) posted a double-double as well with 20 kills and 10 digs, Jordan Pelczar '12 (Meredith, NH) belted 13 kills and Leocadya Koziski '13 (Peabody, MA) had 19 digs. Kiah Begley '13 (Berwick, ME/St. Thomas Aquinas) registered 45 assists and 15 digs, Samantha Varrell '12 (Portsmouth, NH) had 15 digs, Kaleigh McHale '12 (Dracut, MA) posted 14 digs and Cleary added a team-high four kills to her lofty stat line.

Three players had double-double efforts for the Eagles in a losing effort. Brinley-Buckley recorded 31 digs and 13 kills, Rodriguez notched 23 digs and 10 kills and Olesea Cojohari '11 (Balti, Moldova) registered 12 assists and 10 digs to go with 8 kills. Jen McGuire '11 (Nutley, NJ) led the Eagles with 18 assists.

CONSOLATION

Lyndon State and Maine-Machias squared off in the consolation contest, with the LSC Hornets coming away with a 3-1 triumph. All-Tourney honoree Morgan Reilly had 13 assists for Lyndon State, while teammate Kayla Brobst '12 (Merrimack, NH) blasted 8 kills. Boyd led the Clippers with 9 assists and three service aces in the loss.

St. Joe's kicked off the action on Saturday by defeating Lyndon State, 3-1 (25-8, 25-14, 25-16). Hawkes notched 15 kills, Begley collected 22 assists, Cleary had 11 digs and 4 aces and McHale posted 10 digs in the triumph for the Monks. Reilly netted 8 assists and Maegan Fried '13 (Great Falls, MT) corralled 6 digs in the loss for Lyndon State.

Maine-Machias defeated Green Mountain, 3-2, in the other early match.

Saint Joseph's will continue the 2009 campaign when the Monks play host to Lesley College on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM.
