BIDDEFORD, ME - University of New England served up a total
of 15 aces on their way to a 3-0 win over Saint Joseph's College in
non-conference women's volleyball action Tuesday evening at the
Campus Center.
UNE (11-6), which has now won its last 21 meetings with the Monks,
took the first set 25-12 to set the tone. The Nor'easters claimed
the second, 25-16, and closed out the win by grabbing the third
frame, 25-18.
Sophomore middle hitter Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) registered
a match-high 12 kills for UNE, while senior outside hitter Kristen
Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) added six.
First-year setter Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) had 25 assists and
served up four of Big Blue's 15 aces. Classmate Nicole Kalinowski
(Tucson, Ariz.) chipped in six aces while successfully converting
19 of 21 attempts at the service line.
Defensively, Kalinowksi and first-year libero Kirsta Adie
(Tyngsboro, Mass.) each dug out 14 balls and sophomore Jackie Stone
(Saginaw, Mich.) contributed 10. Adie successfully returned all 15
St. Joe's serve attempts that came her way.
Sophomore Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine) and first-year Devon Masse
(Hudson, N.H.) had five kills apiece to pace the Monks' attack.
Sophomore Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine) was credited with 12 assists
and added eight digs. Sophomore Caitlin Cleary (Scarborough, Maine)
and first-year Sarah Coffey (Berwick, Maine) led St. Joe's in that
category with nine each.
The Nor'easters will participate in the Crabtree Invitational
hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University this Friday and
Saturday. UNE opens play with the host Warriors opening night at 8
p.m.
The Monks (12-7) play a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
tri-match at Suffolk University Saturday. St. Joe's takes on
Johnson & Wales University at 1 p.m.
