Monks Defeat Mustangs, Fall to Lasers in GNAC Tri

NEWTON, MA – Saint Joseph's College (19-9, 7-3 GNAC) split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Monks opened the day with a 3-1 triumph over Mount Ida College (3-26, 0-10 GNAC) and capped the afternoon with a 3-1 setback at the hands of tri-host Lasell College (16-11, 7-4 GNAC).

The Monks handed the Mustangs, who suffered a shutout setback to Lasell in the 12:00 PM match, their second loss of the day, pulling out a four set victory by scores of 25-10, 17-25, 25-14 and 25-11. Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) led a potent Saint Joseph's attack with 13 kills while Holly Bannister (Cumberland, Maine) and Alli Hollander (Thermal, Calif.) added seven and six kills, respectively, for the Monks, who recorded a .284 hitting percentage in the match. Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) was stellar defensively tallying a match-high 22 digs and Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) directed the Monks offense with 28 assists.

Mount Ida received a strong effort from Hillary Kostner (Corona, Calif.) who posted a match-high 14 kills while Kellie Schroeder (North Grafton, Mass.) added five kills in the contest. Kostner added 12 digs for the Mustangs, and Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) posted a team-high 18 digs.

Lasell 3 – Saint Joseph's 1

The Lasers earned a key GNAC victory over St. Joe's in the afternoon's third match, winning in four sets 25-16, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-18. Abigail Rollins (North Caldwell, N.J.) and Sharisse Scott-Rawlins (Brockton, Mass.) each tallied 14 kills in the victory for Lasell, while Heather Longley (North Granby, Conn.) and Kathy Cameron (Boston, Mass.) added nine and eight kills respectively. Rollins and Jordan Seid (Rowland Heights, Calif.) each finished with 17 digs for the Lasers

Scott-Rawlins served four aces in the match, Alyssa Nahigian (Coventry, R.I.) handed out a season-high 42 assists and Longley tallied three total blocks.

Wachowiak totaled 13 kills for the second consecutive match for Saint Joseph's, while Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) and Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) tallied seven and six kills apiece, respectively. Gosselin finished with 10 digs in the contest, while McPhee posted a team-high 16 digs. Hebert dished out 27 assists as the Monks were unable to replicate their efficient hitting attack from their first match and struggled on serve receive yielding nine aces to Lasell.

Lasell defeated Mount Ida by a 3-0 score in the sandwich match.

Saint Joseph's College has a non-conference match at Framingham State University on Tuesday at 7:00 PM and closes out the regular season schedule with a GNAC match at Johnson and Wales University next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
