Women's Volleyball Garners AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Saint Joseph's College women's volleyball team has earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, as announced by the organization on Monday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's earns the high academic honor for the first time in program history after posting an outstanding 3.49 team grade point average during the 2017-18 academic year. In order to receive the award, teams must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

With the help of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Academic honorees Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine), Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.), Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.), and Bailey Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine), the Monks join 172 other NCAA DIII institutions on the list of 2018 AVCA Team Academic Award recipients. Overall, 973 college and high school teams received the honor for their efforts in the classroom last year.

The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, was bestowed upon 62 teams in its first year of existence and has grown to this year's total of nearly 1,000 recipients, the largest group of honorees in the program's 25-year history.

The Monks are one of four GNAC teams to earn the high academic honor, as Johnson & Wales University, Simmons College, and Suffolk University join St. Joe's on the esteemed list.
