Exley delivers clutch hit
STANDISH, MAINE - Senior captain Andy
Exley's (Portland, ME) 3-run 2-out homer in the
seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and gave St. Joe's a 6-3 win over
visiting Colby College.
The Monks improved to 11-7 and Colby dropped to 0-15.
After Colby scored twice in the top of the first, St. Joe's tied
the score in the bottom half of the inning. Exley
and sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue
Hill, ME) singled and Colby pitcher Robert Jacobs (Mequon, Wisc.)
intentionally walked NAC Player of the Week, senior
Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME). He
then walked freshman Charlie
Furbush (S. Portland, ME) and junior
Aaron Cieslak, which walked in
two runs.
Colby took a 3-2 lead in the second inning as Nick Spillane
(Darian, CT) singled to score Robert Rosenbaum (Washington,
DC).
St. Joe's tied the game in the bottom of the third as
Furbush singled, Cieslak walked
and junior Nick Arno (Windham,
ME) reached first on a dropped third strike.
Furbush scored after a throwing error by the
catcher.
In the seventh inning, Arno reached first again on
a dropped third strike and freshman Brian
Schools (Gorham, ME) walked.
Exley crushed a 3-run homer with two outs to seal
the victory.
Clapp went 3/4, Exley was 3/5 and
Furbush went 2/3. Colby was led by Spillane 2/5,
Brian Liberty 2/4, Tyler Hales 2/5 and Steve Sandak 2/3.
St. Joe's plays at home on Friday against UMPI in a doubleheader
beginning at 3 PM.
