Monks Fall to Wildcats, 14-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (11-5, 2-0 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-11, 0-2 GNAC), 14-7, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball play on Saturday afternoon.

Today's conference contest was scheduled to take place at Larry Mahaney Diamond but, due to unplayable field conditions, the game was played at the Wildcats' field with the Monks designated as the home team.

SJC graduate starter Matthew Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) suffered the loss after allowing nine runs (six earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Relievers Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, N.H.), Hugh Barrett (Durham, Conn.), Ethan Smith (Hudson Oaks, Texas), Zack Adams (Norton, Mass.), and Michael Wearne (Ellington, Conn.) combined to give up five earned runs on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in three innings of work.

Senior Dawson Gundlah (York, Maine) was 2-5 with two doubles and four RBI, Wearne went 2-4 with a run, a double, and an RBI, sophomore Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.) was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored, and senior Matt Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-4 with a run.

Saint Joseph's will host Plymouth State University in the team's 2024 home-opener on Monday at 3:30 PM.
