North Atlantic Conference Tournament Results (Day 1)

GAME 1

STANDISH , MAINE - Senior Greg Kimball (Berwick, ME) pitched 7 2/3 innings to lead #1 seed Saint Joseph 's College past #4 seed Castleton State College 3-2 in the opening game of the 2005 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball tournament at Mahaney Diamond. Kimball gave up only two hits, while walking four and striking out two for his sixth win of the season.

The Monks (30-9) (12-1 NAC) needed to rally for the win after falling behind 2-1 to the Spartans (18-20) (7-6 NAC) after five innings. The Monks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with one run on a gap triple by Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) and an RBI single by senior Jake Rodden (Somersworth, NH).

The big hit for the Monks came in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out. Senior Derek McIntosh Auburn, ME) hit a 3-2 curve ball over the left center field fence for his eleventh home run of the season to give the Monks the go-ahead run.

Furbush made a rare relief appearance with a runner on second base and two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Furbush got the Spartans clean-up hitter to strike out to end the inning and retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning on a ground out and two fly balls to earn his second save of the season.

First year Tom Cummings (Athol, MA) was the losing pitcher for the Spartans. Cummings allowed nine hits in eight innings of work.

GAME 2

STANDISH, MAINE - First year Keith Renaud (Southbridge, MA) hit a two-run home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning to lead #3 seed Becker College past #2 seed Husson College 6-5 in game two of the 2005 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball tournament at Mahaney Diamond.

The Hawks (23-15) (8-5 NAC) jumped out to an early lead on a solo home-run in the top of the first inning by Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, MA). The Eagles (23-16) (9-4 NAC) did one better in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by junior Sean Brawn (Augusta, ME). Becker tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning on a solo home run by junior Devin Caron (Portland, ME). The Hawks added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 lead.

Husson loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and junior Justin Spencer (Brewer, ME) delivered the big hit with a bases clearing triple to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. The Eagles lead looked solid until sophomore Cory Sheppard (Worcester, MA) singled with one out in the ninth and Keith Renaud drove a pitch from senior Barrett Dionne (Bangor, ME) over the left center field fence for a two-run home run.

First year Mike Carbonneau pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season for the Hawks. Carbonneau retired seven of the eight Husson batters he faced while recording one strike out.

Spencer had two hits and three RBI's to lead Husson at the plate. Dionne took the loss on the hill for the Eagles.
