St. Joe's Sweeps Plymouth State

STANDISH, MAINE - St. Joe's jumped out to an early lead and earned an 11-4 win over visiting Plymouth State. Freshman Steven Stout (Gloucester, MA) recorded his fourth win of the season, pitching 5 innings and striking out 6 batters.

The Monks (22-8) went up 3-0 on a 3-run homer by freshman Luke Enman (Milan, NH) that scored senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) and freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME).

The lead was extended in the second inning as St. Joe's batted around and scored 6 runs to make it 9-0. Freshman Andrew Dvilinsky (Portland, ME/Deering) walked, freshman Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) singled and senior captain Andy Exley (Portland, ME/Deering) singled to score Dvilinsky. Sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) walked and Furbush hit a bases clearing double. Enman walked and senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) hit a 2-RBI double.

Plymouth State answered back in the third inning with a grand slam by junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, NH), but St. Joe's scored two more runs in the sixth as McIntosh hit a 2-run homer to put the game out of reach for the Panthers.

McIntosh and Furbush had two hits apiece for St. Joe's. Senior John Perkins took the loss for the visitors.

Freshman Miles Johnson (Berwick, ME) struck out 6 batters and earned his second win of the season in an 8-5 game 2 win for St. Joe's.

The Monks (23-8) got off to another good start, scoring a run in the first and third innings until giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in the fourth inning. The Monks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, however, as Luke Enman and Aaron Cieslak scored to make it 4-3.

McIntosh scored in the fifth inning off of a single by Cieslak and St. Joe's added 3 more runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-3. Schools doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball. Schools scored as Exley struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike. Furbush singled and drove in Exley and Furbush scored before Enman was thrown out at third while trying to turn a double into a triple.

Plymouth (5-23) had a rally in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on singles by sophomore Dylan Mullin (Derry, NH) and senior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, ME) but St. Joe's held on for the win.

Freshman Jim VanGyzen (Foster, RI) struck out 6 batters in a losing effort for the Panthers.

The Monks take on the USM Huskies at Mahaney Diamond on Thursday, April 28 at 5 PM.
