Standish, ME - The Saint Joseph's College baseball
team split a pair of non-conference games with Plymouth State
University on Sunday, winning game one 11-2 before falling to the
Panthers 9-8 in game two. With the victory in game one, the Monks
set the program record for consecutive wins to begin a season.
The Royal Blue offense registered 12 hits in the opener led by JR
CF Dustin Spiller (Gorham, ME) who was 3-3 with a
pair of runs scored. JR SS Luke Enman (Milan, NH)
blasted his fourth homerun of the young season en route to a 2-5, 2
RBI game. SR captain Keil Martin (Saco, ME) was
2-4 with an RBI, and Wade Oliver (SO, Owl's Head,
ME) rounded out the multiple hitters with a 2-5 effort in the lead
off spot.
The Monks tacked on 5 insurance runs in the bottom
of the sixth inning, three of those runs coming on one of the
strangest plays ever witnessed on the field. With the bases loaded,
2B Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) hit a high pop up to
the PSU first baseman, Schools was ruled out on the infield fly
rule. When Panther 1B Jamie Aceto failed to catch the pop Monks 3B
Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) took off from first
base, this baserunning mistake caused mass confusion resulting in a
throwing error that cleared the bases.
Sr Captain Sam Tupper (Yarmouth, ME) was solid in
the opener going 6 innings allowing 6 hits striking out two. Tupper
(3-0) was relieved by FY RHP Craig Woodbrey who
struck out 1, throwing a scoreless seventh inning.
Game two got off to rocky start for the Monks as FY LHP
Kyle Dorr (Berwick, ME) was chased from the game
after 2/3 of an inning giving up six runs on 4 hits. He was
relieved by JR Ryan Boucher (Manchester, NH) who
failed to record an out as he allowed the Panther lead to balloon
to 7-0 before giving way to FY LHP Andrew
Keirstead (Westbrook, ME). Keirstead was brilliant in
relief allowing the Royal Blue to charge all the back to make it a
7-7 game after three complete innings. The PSU offense proved to be
too much, though, as they touched the rookie southpaw up for two
runs in the top of the fourth inning to take back the lead 9-7. SJC
made it a one run game in the bottom of the sixth but could not
make a second comeback, falling 9-8.
FY 1B Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, ME) led the
offense for the St. Joe's in game two with a 2-4, 2 RBI effort,
including his first collegiate homerun. Luke Enman
chipped in a 2-3 game, and Schools wound up 2-3 with an RBI.
