MALDEN, MA - Sophomore Tim Corcoran's (Beverly, Mass.) walk-off
grand slam in the bottom of the eighth capped a three-hit, seven
RBI performance that lifted Suffolk to a 15-11 nightcap victory and
a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball
doubleheader of Saint Joseph's (Maine) Saturday afternoon at Malden
Catholic High School, as the Rams took the opener by a 7-0 final
behind a complete-game three-hit shutout effort on the mound by
senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.).
Suffolk (10-4, 2-0 Great Northeast) snapped a 5-5 tie with three
fourth inning runs in the nightcap on RBI doubles off the bats of
Corcoran and senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.) that followed
a sacrifice fly by junior Keith Carter (Newburyport, Mass.), but
the visiting Monks (7-8, 0-2 Great Northeast) closed back to within
8-7 in the fifth on a two-run homer by sophomore
Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine).
The Rams plated three in the bottom of the inning on a two-run
triple by junior Chris Barber (Falmouth, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly
from sophomore Rory Gentile (Gloucester, Mass.), but Saint Joseph's
evened matters with four runs in the sixth on an RBI single by
senior Brian Schools (Gorham,
Maine) and a two-run safety from Grant-Roy. The
Monks had a chance to take the lead in the seventh with runners on
the corners, but Suffolk freshman Steve Healey (Norwood, Mass.)
picked off a runner to end the frame, setting the stage for
Corcoran's game-winning heroics in the extra frame.
Martinho joined Corcoran with three hits in the second game triumph
for the Rams, who also received a pair of hits off the bat of
sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.). Healey collected his first
collegiate win with 1 1/3 innings in relief of junior Reid Jackson
(Burlington, Mass.), who fanned seven over 6 2/3 innings of work.
Grant-Roy finished with three hits and five RBI in the nightcap
setback for Saint Joseph's, who also received two hits each from
Schools, junior Wade
Oliver (Owls Head, Maine) and sophomore
Mike Burdin (Gardiner, Maine).
Sophomore Pat Moran (Winterport,
Maine) and freshman Ian Lee
(Hampden, Maine) also went deep in the second game for the Monks,
as sophomore Mike Burdin took the loss on the
mound in relief.
Suffolk jumped out to a 5-0 second inning lead in the opener, as
Gentile led off the first with a homer and Barrett forced in a run
after being hit by a pitch, and the Rams plated three more in the
second on a pair of passed balls and a bases loaded walk to
Martinho, who rapped out his fifth homer of the spring in the
fourth. Barrett rapped out his first round-tripper of the season to
close out the scoring in the fifth for Suffolk, as Durant scattered
three hits and struck out five to improve to 3-1 on the same mound
that he pitched on in high school. Moran took the
loss in the opening game for Saint Joseph's fanning four in four
innings of work for the Monks.
