Monks Head North Clicking on all Cylinders

WINTER HAVEN, FL - Saint Joseph's (4-5) capped their southern swing with a 16-2 rout over SUNY-Cobleskill on Saturday morning. Southpaw Sam Murray '12 (Walpole, MA) allowed four hits and one earned run over five innings to collect his first collegiate victory and Chris Dion '11 (Lawrence, MA) tossed two perfect innings, fanning four batters. First Baseman Ben Grant-Roy '10 (Biddeford, ME) went 3-3 with a triple, inside the park home run and four RBI's to lead the Monks' offensive effort. In all, St. Joe's notched 16 hits and five players had multiple-hit performances in the triumph.

St. Joe's led 3-1 after three innings and exploded for 13 runs over the final four frames in the one-sided contest.

Grant-Roy's sac fly in the first inning sent Wade Oliver '09 (Owls Head, ME), who led off the game with a walk, across the plate to give the Monks a 1-0 lead. The Fighting Tigers answered in the second by scoring an unearned run to tie the game, as Dylan Cramer '12 (Clifton Park, NY), who led off with a single, scored on an error by Monks left fielder Pat Hamilton '12 (Plaistow, NH).

Oliver, who reached base in each of his four plate appearances on the day, was nicked by a Tom Wiener '11 (Montrose, NY) pitch and promptly stole second base. SJC second sacker Chris Campbell '11 (Rochester, NH) moved Oliver to third on a grounder to the right side before Grant-Roy hammered his first triple of the season down the right field line to give his team a 2-1 lead. Todd Keneborus '11 (Hollis Center, ME/Cheverus) followed by lifting a single to left to plate Grant-Roy.

St. Joe's took control of the game with five runs in the fourth, three coming off inside the park home runs from Eric LaBatte '12 (Rochester, NH), who led off with a line shot to straightaway center for a leg round tripper, and Grant-Roy. Hamilton scored on an Oliver two-bagger and Campbell reached home on a sac fly to right from catcher Ian Lee '11 (Hampden, ME) before Grant-Roy's two-run blast to right-center. Oliver's double was a line drive off the wrist of Wiener, who left the game after the play and was replaced on the hill by Tim Irizarry '12 (Peekskill, NY).

Murray cruised through the third and fourth innings, allowing just one base runner on his own error and recording three punch outs.

The Monks added two more runs in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. SJC shortstop Dan Achorn '12 (Bow, NH) and Hamilton recorded singles with one out before Oliver doubled to right center, scoring Achorn. Campbell notched an RBI with a chopper to third to plate Hamilton.

The Fighting Tigers used two hits and a sac fly to tack on a run in the fifth. Achorn made a nifty play on a ball hit by Matt Whelehan '12 (Brooklyn, NY), ranging to his right to snag a grounder, but his throw took Grant-Roy off the bag, resulting in an infield hit. Tim Pyszczynski '12 (Alden, NY) singled to left off Murray and Whelehan stole third to set up the sac fly to center by Dunea Lockwood '11 (Cobleskill, NY), making the score 10-2, St. Joe's.

The Royal Blue padded their lead with three more in the sixth to take a 13-2 lead. Grant-Roy singled and was lifted for a pinch runner, Justin Young '12 (Sanford, ME), who moved to second when Dan Brown '12 (Portland, ME/Deering) reached on an infield error. Michael Hebenstreit '09 (Centerville, MA) walked to load the bases for Achorn, who drove a first pitch fastball to right to collect a pair of RBI's. Righty Keith Millione '12 (Lynbrook, NY) replaced Irizarry on the mound and proceeded to walk Nick Lemieux '12 (Thomaston, ME) to re-load the bases and hit Steve Gorsun '09 (South Berwick, ME) with a pitch to send home Hebenstreit.

Andrew Riotto '11 (Somersworth, NH) notched his first collegiate hit with a line drive through the left side with one out in the seventh and advanced to second on a passed ball. Cameron Sprague '12 (Portland, ME/Deering), still looking for his inaugural base knock, hit pay dirt with a single to right and plated Riotto in the process. Peter Allain '12 (Salem, NH) was hit by a Millione pitch and scored, along with Sprague, on a Lemieux single to cap the game scoring.

Campbell, LaBatte, Achorn and Oliver, who also netted three runs, all had two hits in the victory. Hamilton scored twice and Keneborus pilfered a pair of bases for the Monks. As a team, St. Joe's swiped six bags in the decisive win.

LaBatte closes out the trip on a six-game hitting streak and Grant-Roy has five hits in his last six trips to the plate and is riding a five-game streak. Oliver's stolen base in the third inning was the 30th of his career, making him the 11th in team history to reach the plateau.

Campbell completed the trip with a team-high .464 (13-28) batting average, while LaBatte led the team with 10 RBI's and Grant-Roy leads the way with 11 runs scored.

Collectively, the Monks pitching staff has issued just one free pass in the team's last 28 innings of play and no extra base hits in the last two games. In two starts on the hill, Pat Moran '10 (Winterport, ME) posted a miniscule 1.32 earned run average and fanned 12 while allowing six hits and no walks in 13 2/3 innings.

The Monks will play at New Jersey City University next weekend, with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. The games are slated to begin at 11:00 AM on both days.
