Saint Joseph's Falls to #21 Concordia-Chicago, 5-0

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (4-2) could not get the bats going in a 5-0 loss to #21 Concordia University Chicago (6-2) in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks were only able to churn out three hits against sophomore Concordia-Chicago starter, Mike Formella (Homer Glen, IL). The 6-foot-2 righty went the distance, only walking two and striking out five.

The Cougars notched a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from their junior cleanup hitter, Brent Spohr (Ingleside, IL). Spohr finished with three hits, two doubles, and a stolen base.

Concordia-Chicago struck for three runs in the third, thanks to a three-run double off the bat of sophomore catcher Brady Roberts (Aurora, IL), giving Concordia-Chicago a 4-0 lead. Roberts tacked on a run-scoring single in the seventh. The young backstop led the way for the Cougars with four runs batted in and three hits on the day.

PITCHER OF RECORD

Junior lefty Matt Wojciak drew the start for the Monks but was only able to last two-and-two-thirds innings. Wojciak allowed four earned runs over seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Thursday was the first appearance of the season for Wojciak as he looks to build upon a fine sophomore season (3-0, 4.05 ERA).
