Monks Split GNAC Doubleheader with Lasers

WALTHAM, Mass. (4/17/16) The Lasell baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Saint Joseph's (ME) on Sunday evening at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University. The Lasers improved to 12-13 and 4-4 in the GNAC while the Monks advanced to 15-10 and 6-2 in league play.

Game One: Saint Joseph's: 4 Lasell: 3

Junior Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) earned two hits in game one and drove in a run for the Lasers while senior Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) also swung into two hits highlighted by an RBI single.

Senior Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine.) reached base twice for the Monks and came around to score both times in the visitors' victory, while junior Mac McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) also smacked two hits and scored once in game one.

The Monks got their bats going in the first side against the Lasers on a two-run double by junior Jameson Collins (Sandown, N.H.). Lasell chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of RBI single by Coscione, to drive in senior Dan Gagnon (Pomfret, Conn.). After an RBI double to right center from junior Scott Betts (Peabody, Mass.) gave the Monks a 3-1 bump, both starting pitchers settled into the game.

In the top of the sixth, the Monks added an insurance run to make the score 4-1 with six outs remaining for the Lasers. The top of the order began to rally against the Monks' bullpen and put up two runs on an RBI single by Beckerman, but the Lasers were unable to finish their comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) threw a complete game giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out five. Malone's counterpart sophomore Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) allowed three runs on three hits over five innings while senior Corey McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) earned the five out save for the Monks.

Game Two: Lasell: 3 Saint Joseph's: 2

Gagnon ripped two hits and scored two runs for the Lasers while Beckerman earned another two base hits including an RBI double. Sophomore Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) also earned an RBI single for the Lasers.

Junior Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, Maine) smashed two extra base hits capped by a two-run homer for the only runs in the game for the Monks.

The Lasers started hitting early again in the first when Mascolo and Beckerman both smacked RBI singles to take an early 2-0 lead over the Monks. Meehan quickly answered the Lasers' runs with a two run homer to tie the game in the second, 2-2. Gagnon drove home the eventual game winning run on the wheels of junior Brandon Valentin (Meriden, Conn.) in the bottom half of the inning to extend the Lasers' lead for the 3-2 final.

Senior Gary Trottier (Rehoboth, Mass.) allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings while striking out nine batters. Sophomore Marc Poirier (Lunenburg, Mass.) came on and allowed one hit over 4 2/3 innings while punching out eight batters.
