Demma & Gravel Claim GNAC Weekly Accolades

STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honors have been announced and a pair of Saint Joseph's College freshman baseball players have earned accolades.

First-year hurler Matt Demma (Worcester, Mass.) has been selected as the GNAC Pitcher of the Week and freshman outfielder Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) has collected GNAC Rookie of the Week honors.

In two starts last week, Demma allowed just one hit and two walks with 12 strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work. The freshman righthander gave up one hit with 10 K's in five frames versus Plymouth State on Monday and tossed 4.2 no-hit innings with a pair of punch-outs versus Suffolk on Saturday.

Gravel hit .417 (5-12) with three runs, two doubles, three walks, and five RBI in 6-2 week for the Monks. The freshman outfielder was 2-4 with a run, a double, and three RBI in a win over Plymouth State on Monday and went 2-3 with a run, a double, and two RBI versus Rivier on Sunday. He posted a .563 OBP over five games.

In seven appearances, including three starts, this spring, Demma has posted a 0.93 ERA with a 1-0 record and 25 strikeouts in 19.1 innings. He has allowed just 12 hits and five walks and held opponents to a .176 (12-68) collective batting average.

In 14 games this season, Gravel is hitting .400 (10-25) with seven runs, two doubles, a home run, 11 RBI and a stolen base. The weekly honor is his second of the season after earning GNAC top-rookie billing on March 26th.

#20/24 Saint Joseph's (26-6, 9-1 GNAC) is scheduled to host Norwich University in a GNAC doubleheader tomorrow at 3:00 PM.
