AUSTIN, Texas - Saint Joseph's College senior outfielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) has earned 2019 Google Cloud Second Team Academic All-America® honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday afternoon.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program every spring separately recognizes baseball and softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
A Finance & Marketing major, Gagne collected Google Cloud Academic All-District® accolades during his junior and senior years and is line to claim Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Academic accolades for the third-consecutive year.
Gagne is the fifth SJC student-athlete – and third this year - in college history to garner Academic All-America® honors as he joins Kelsi McNamara '19 (Women's Basketball), Darian Berry '19 (Men's Basketball), Taylor Black '17 (Baseball), and Alyssa Dunn '11 (Softball) on the exclusive list.
The two-time First Team All-GNAC honoree recently collected ABCA/Rawlings and NEIBA Third Team All-New England honors for the second-consecutive season after batting .387 (60-155) with 48 runs, 11 doubles, six triples, one home run, 33 RBI, and 35 stolen bases during his senior campaign. The team tri-captain boasted a .555 slugging percentage with a .438 OBP and logged 18 multiple-hit games while starting all 45 of the Monks' games this spring.
Gagne appeared in 148 career games, including 111 starts, and hit .366 (138-377) with 112 runs, 23 doubles, 11 triples, two home runs, 71 RBI, and 70 stolen bases over four seasons. He leaves the program ranked second in Monks baseball history in steals and ninth in batting average.
Gagne is one of just four players from the New England Region to earn Academic All-America® honors, as he is joined by Williams College senior infielder Doug Shaffer, MIT junior outfielder Matt Johnston, and WPI senior outfielder Ryan Tropeano on the short list.
Nine of the 33 members of the 2019 Google Cloud All-America® Division III Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams have a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average cumulative GPA of 3.97 and the 33 student-athletes that make up all three teams have an average cumulative GPA of 3.84.
Six of this year's 33 student-athletes on the three teams are repeat selections from 2018. Rocco Maue of Case Western Reserve and Derek Manning of Elizabethtown College are on this year's Google Cloud All-America® Division III First Team, following first team accolades last season. Widener's Nick D'Alessandro and Ohio Northern's Caleb Thomas, second team honorees in 2018, join Maue and Manning on this year's first team unit. Matt Johnson of MIT is on the second team this year, following third team recognition in 2018. Penn State Behrend's Scott Sada, a second team selection in 2018, is a third team honoree this season.
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
