Saint Joseph's Suffers Pair of Shutout Losses to Simpson

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-4) was unable to generate any offense and suffered a pair of shutout losses at the hands of Simpson College (6-2) in RussMatt Central Florida baseball action at Polk State College on Sunday. The Storm defeated the Monks, 3-0, in the first game and registered a 9-0 triumph in the second contest.

GAME ONE:

SJC sophomore starter Ethan Smith (Hudson Oaks, Texas) and Simpson starter Trey Castile locked heads for five scoreless innings before the Storm knocked home two runs on one hit and two errors in the top of the sixth. Simpson tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning with the help of another SJC miscue.

The Monks had just five runners reach base in the opener, with none advancing past second base.

Smith suffered the loss after allowing three runs (none earned) on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a complete-game performance. The sophomore righthander threw 90 pitches, 57 for strikes, in the setback.

Castile closed out the contest having allowed only three hits with 11 K's over seven frames.

Junior right fielder Alex Moore (Henniker, N.H.) was 1-2 with a double.

GAME TWO:

After two and a half scoreless innings, the Storm broke through with four runs on three hits and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the third. Simpson catcher Will Carlock recorded a two-run single during the crooked number inning.

Simpson added another run in the bottom of the fifth and put up a crooked number with four tallies off four hits and a St. Joe's error in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Nate Cagley roped a two-run double to help put the game out of reach.

Junior Logan Dee (Laconia, N.H.) was 1-1 with a single (third inning), a walk, and a stolen base.

Junior starter Anthony Sayers (Benoni, South Africa) was hit with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with three K's in 2.2 innings. Junior reliever Hugh Barrett (Durham, Conn.) gave up a run on a hit with two walks and two punchouts and junior Zack Adams (Norton, Mass.) closed out the game by allowing four runs off four hits during the sixth inning.

Simpson starter Easton Dunwoody tossed seven one-hit innings with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Saint Joseph's will face off against Illinois Wesleyan tomorrow at 9:15 AM.
