Monks Open Alpine Season at Gunstock Mountain

RESULTS: SLALOM #1 l SLALOM #2

GILFORD, N.H. – The Saint Joseph's College men's and women's alpine ski teams opened the 2021 season with an appearance in the Slalom Fest at Gunstock Mountain Resort on Friday. The Monks competed as individuals in the event, which was open to the general public and featured racers of all ages.

SLALOM #1 – MEN:

  • Freshman Liam Strobeck (Charlotte, Vt.) kicked off his college career in style by finishing with the lowest combined time (49.80) of any individual in the first event after posting a 24.81 time in the first race and a 24.99 in the second stint
  • First-year Caleb Gorton (Goffstown, N.H.) posted a 54.77 combined time with a 27.09 effort on the first run and a 27.68 trek on the second
  • Freshman Aidan Wolfinger (Bedford, N.H.) logged a 54.79 (27.11, 27.68) composite time
  • Sophomore Tucker Davis (South Berwick, Maine) notched a 1:02.70 (30.77, 31.93) combined time

SLALOM #2 – MEN:

  • Strobeck recorded the second-fastest combined time (49.05) in the second slalom race with a 24.40 effort on the first run and a 24.65 time on the second
  • Gorton registered a 51.70 (26.04, 25.66) combined time
  • Wolfinger notched a 52.73 (26.16, 26.57) composite time
  • Davis rounded out the Monks' quartet of men's competitors with a 1:01.45 (30.26, 31.19) performance

SLALOM #1 – WOMEN:

  • Sophomore Jillian Luby posted the fastest women's combined time (1:02.50) with a 31.50 time in the first race and a 30.55 effort in the second
  • Freshman Erica Irvin (Windham, Maine) enjoyed a fine start to her collegiate career with a 1:04.09 (32.02, 32.07) combined time
  • Junior Sarah Hotchkiss (New Durham, N.H.) registered a 1:06.38 (33.09, 33.29) effort
  • Freshman Kaitlyn Gerhard posted a 1:26.06 (42.37, 43.69) performances

SLALOM #2 – WOMEN:

  • Irvin tallied the fastest overall women's time in the second slalom with a 1:00.18 (29.71, 30.47) effort
  • Luby finished just behind her freshman teammate with a 1:00.57 (29.98, 30.59) combined time
  • Hotchkiss recorded a 1:02.32 (31.09, 31.23) composite time
  • Gerhard chipped in with a 1:19.49 (39.05, 40.44) combined time

The Monks are back in action on Monday, January 18th when the team competes in a USSA event at Sunday River.
