Swarthmore Tops Saint Joseph's, 16-5

SWARTHMORE, PA – Swarthmore College (3-2) defeated Saint Joseph's (1-4), 16-5, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Tuesday afternoon. Monks senior attackman Jonathan Horgan (Hingham, Mass.) netted a game-high four goals in a losing effort.

The Monks netted four man-up goals, including three from Horgan, in the setback. Fellow senior Paul Dolewa (Saco, Maine) netted the other power play marker. SJC freshman keeper Ethan Rettew (Ephrata, Pa.) faced 32 shots and made 16 saves in his first collegiate start.

Junior Robert Murtha (North Kingstown, R.I.), sophomores Andrew Hamill (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Jake Ricciardi (Sharon, Mass.), and freshman Max Meserve (Kennebunk, Maine) all tallied assists for Saint Joseph's.

The host Garnets featured a balanced scoring attack as seven players found the back of the net in the 11-goal victory. Junior Wes Marcik and sophomores Jonathan Molloy and Daniel Kowalyshyn led the Swat offense, each recording a hat trick in the game. Seniors Max Hubbard and John Bukawyn each added a pair of goals, freshman Ian Lukaszewicz netted two goals and sophomore Brendan Conway rounded out the scoring with a goal.

Conway, Molloy, junior Steve Selverian and freshman Joe Hagedorn all added assists to fuel the potent Garnet offense. The Swarthmore defense was also solid, forcing 26 turnovers and causing 11 failed clear attempts on the afternoon.

In goal, senior Michael Brockway, sophomore Jonathan Cohen and freshman Callen Rain all split time, combining for four saves.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt following the first quarter, as the Garnet used a six-goal period to break open a 2-1 contest. Hubbard got the scoring started with an unassisted rocket, making it a 3-1 game just 90 seconds into the second quarter. Less than a minute later, Molloy scored his first goal of the contest on a man-up opportunity, quickly making it a 4-1 game.

After Horgan made it a 4-2 contest with a tally at the 11:28 mark, Swat responded with three unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Conway, Kowalyshyn and Bukawyn all scored to make it a 7-2 game with just 3:11 to play in the half.  After Horgan found the net again to make it 7-3, Molloy provided the quick answer, scoring with just :25 seconds to play in the half to make it a 8-3 game at the break.

Leading 8-3 at the half, the Garnet used another six-goal period to make the game a rout. Thanks to goals from Hubbard, Bukawyn, Lukaszewicz, Kowalyshyn, Marcik and Molloy, the Garnet found itself ahead by a commanding score of 14-5 heading into the final period.

Sophomore Patrick Hackeling finished with a game-high five ground balls and won six of nine face-offs. Lukaszewicz, Bukawyn, senior Joe Niagara, junior Eddie Montenegro and sophomore Keane Ehsani all finished with three ground balls. Cohen, sophomore Justin Shickman and sophomore Geli Carabases led the way with two caused turnovers each.

Saint Joseph's returns to New England for a non-conference contest at Salem State at 7:00 PM on March 20th.
