Monks Throttle Pride on Senior Day, 21-8

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (7-7, 4-3 GNAC) toppled Regis College (5-6, 1-6 GNAC), 21-8, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action on a rainy Friday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex.

SENIOR MOMENT:

Prior to the start of the contest the Monks held a brief ceremony to recognize the program's seven seniors: Ian Barker (Norton, Mass.), Jacob Fles (Gardiner, Maine), Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.), Scott Lynch (Gray, Maine), Sean Powers (Merrimack, N.H.), Devin Rheaume (Londonderry, N.H.), and Aidan Wolfinger (Bedford, N.H.). All seven players have been four-year members of the program and have helped the Monks post an 18-13 record in conference play while advancing to the GNAC Tournament in each of the last two seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks opened the scoring with three goals in the first five minutes and the hosts held a 9-1 advantage after sophomore Tiger Hopkins (Leeds, Maine) netted his second goal of the game with 10:54 left in the second stanza.

Saint Joseph's carried a 15-3 lead into intermission and maintained at least a 10-goal advantage for the remainder of the contest.

TEAMS STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (68-29), shots on goal (35-16), ground balls (53-33), caused turnovers (13-8), and face-off wins (24-9).

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks split time in goal with freshman Reed Wescott (Windham, Maine) allowing three goals while making four saves and junior Scott Walsh (Brookline, N.H.) yielding five tallies with four stops.

For Regis, Devon Hammon (Chicopee, Mass.) allowed 18 goals and made 12 saves in 45 minutes and freshman Ryan Guerrette (Litchfield, N.H.) turned away two shots while giving up three goals in 15 minutes.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Grad Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) scored four goals with an assist and four ground balls
  • Hopkins netted three goals with two assists on 12 shots
  • Goodfellow added two goals, three assists, and four ground balls
  • Grad Nathaniel Girardin (Brunswick, Maine) scored three goals with three caused turnovers
  • Sophomore Nick Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) tallied two goals, two assists, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers
  • Junior Will Levesque (Marlow, N.H.) and freshman Brandon Cavicchi (Kingston, Mass.) potted two goals apiece
  • Freshman Zander Kirk (Bath, Maine) won 11-of-17 face-off attempts with eight ground balls
  • Barker won 13-of-16 face-offs with five ground balls

LEADERS – REGIS:

  • Sophomore Nick Klein (Buxton, Maine) tallied three goals, four ground balls, and a caused turnover
  • Junior Anthony Marsella (Johnston, R.I.) netted two goals with an assist on seven shots
  • Junior Brandon Cook (Billerica, Mass.) scored two goals
  • Sophomores Colin McGarry (Brookline, N.H.) and Matt Cabassa picked up six ground balls apiece

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-1 in the history of the series with Regis College.

Saint Joseph's will play at Anna Maria College on Wednesday in a GNAC contest slated to start at 5:00 PM.
