Colby Defeats Saint Joseph’s, 22-10

STANDISH, Maine – Colby College (3-2) defeated Saint Joseph's College (4-5), 22-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Colby kicked off the game with six unanswered goals as the Monks did not find the scoreboard until junior Will Levesque (Marlow, N.H.) netted his seventh goal of the season with 1:37 left in the first quarter.

The Mules extended their lead to 10-1 with four goals in the first three minutes of the second stanza and headed into intermission holding a 14-4 advantage. St. Joe's received two goals from grad Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) and single strikes from Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) and Aidan Dennis (Hooksett, N.H.) as the hosts faced a 19-8 deficit going into the final frame.

Colby started the fourth quarter with three straight tallies before Saint Joseph's capped the scoring ledger with goals from grad Nathaniel Girardin (Brunswick, Maine) and Goodfellow late in the period to account for the 22-10 final.

TEAM STATS:

Colby held the lead in shots (48-42), shots on goal (31-25), ground balls (61-38), and face-off victories (26-10) while Saint Joseph's posted a 13-7 advantage in caused turnovers.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC freshman starter Reed Wescott (Windham, Maine) made five saves in 34:40, junior Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) turned away one shot in 15:40, and freshman Nic Michaud (Wales, Maine) posted three saves in 9:40.

For Colby, sophomore starter Will Heisler (Westport, Conn.) made seven saves with four goals allowed in the first half while junior Will Rickards (Andover, Mass.) added eight saves in the second period.

  • Goodfellow scored three goals with an assist
  • Girardin added two goals, an assist, and two ground balls
  • Levesque and Xavier Michaud netted two goals apiece
  • Sophomore Matt Denman (Brentwood, N.H.) delivered three assists and four ground balls
  • Sophomore defender Nick Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) notched four ground balls and four caused turnovers
  • Junior Michael Jordan (Saco, Maine) picked up five ground balls
  • Freshman Zander Kirk (Bath, Maine) was 7-17 on face-off bids with four ground balls

LEADERS – COLBY:

  • Sophomore Cormac O'Neill (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied three goals, four assists, and six ground balls
  • Senior Doug McCarthy (Westlake Village, Calif.) scored four goals with four ground balls
  • Freshman Gavin Rothenberg (Westport, Conn.) netted three goals with an assist
  • Senior Rafa Bru (Miami, Fla.) was 17-22 on face-off attempts with a goal and eight ground balls
  • Freshman Kyle Skop (Pelham, N.Y.) was 9-14 on face-off bids with eight ground balls
  • Junior Matt Stein (Darien, Conn.) scored three goals on four shots
