Six Monks Collect All-Conference Honors

STANDISH, ME - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has announced the 2008 Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams and six Saint Joseph's College players have been honored.

Junior goalkeeper Will Pike (Gorham, ME) has been selected as an All-Conference First Team member while four SJC players, forward Doug MacCallum ‘10 (Hingham, MA), midfielder Paul Robins ‘11 (Cornwall, England), midfielder Kevin Melega ‘09 (Easthampton, MA) and defender Lane Hubacz ‘09 (Mapleville, RI) have received All-Conference Second Team honors. Defender Greg Cavanaugh 10 (Haverhill, MA) has been named to the Third Team.

Pike receives First-Team accolades after posting a league-best eight shutouts and .863 save percentage. His 0.90 goals-against average ranks second in the conference and is the best mark posted in a single season in program history. Pike was named as the GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week three times, was listed on the conference honor roll five times and was named the ECAC DIII New England Defensive Player of the Week once this season. The All-Conference honor is his first.

MacCallum's 15 goals and 35 points this season rank as the second-best offensive season in SJC history behind Jesse Beers' 2000 season, when he notched 16 goals and 41 points. The junior owns the St. Joe's record for career goals, with 26, and, with 59 career points, is one point behind Mike Herrick '01 for the all-time mark. This is MacCallum's first All-Conference nod.

Robins receives his first All-Conference honor after collecting five goals and 10 assists, a program single-season record, for 20 total points this fall. The sophomore midfielder was named to the GNAC Honor Roll on one occasion this season.

Senior co-captains Melega and Hubacz, who receives his second All-Conference award, have provided the foundation for this team's success in ‘08. Melega, also the team's Sportsmanship Team representative, patrols the heart of the field with great instincts and is the engine of the Royal Blue machine. He has tallied 13 points so far this season and has accumulated 40 career points, which is good for eighth all-time at St. Joe's. Hubacz, the center back for a stingy SJC defense which holds the team record for fewest goals allowed (19), is a two-year captain with excellent instincts and leadership skills.

Cavanaugh, the side's "unsung hero," garners All-Conference Third Team honors, his first all-league selection. The junior emerged as the team's emotional leader on the backline on a squad that led the league in shutouts (8) and was second in goals allowed per game (.94) during the regular season. Cavanaugh deposited a game-winning goal over rival Maine-Farmington on September 23rd to help lift the Monks to their first-ever victory over the Beavers.

Saint Joseph's, the 2008 GNAC runner-up, received the program's first ECAC Tournament berth as the sixth seed and will play #3 US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
