NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Albertus Magnus College (9-2-3, 7-2-2 GNAC) blanked Saint Joseph's College (9-3-2, 9-2-0 GNAC), 2-0, in a foul riddled Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Falcons scored just 2:12 into the game, as Kelvin Cortez claimed a rebound off his own shot and steered the ball into the net on a bid taken from outside the box near the end line.
SJC freshman Cole Bishop (Gorham, Maine) nearly netted the equalizer three minutes later with a pair of shots off a corner kick, but Albertus netminder David Lucero turned away both attempts.
The flurry of flags followed, as the Monks were called on five infractions during a 10 minute span, a window that culminated in a red card for an SJC player at the 16:19 mark and forced the Royal Blue to play a man down for the remainder of the contest.
The Falcons' lead remained at 1-0 until Cortez delivered a PK goal in the 80th minute.
An Albertus player was ejected on a red card in the 82nd minute, but the hosts managed to keep the Monks off the board.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (12-10) and shots on goal (6-4) while both team attempted six corner kicks on the afternoon. The Monks endured a 19-11 foul discrepancy and received six total cards (5 yellow, 1 red) opposed to the two cards (1 red, 1 yellow) given to the Falcons.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the loss while Lucero posted six stops in the Falcons' victory.
