STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-0-2, 0-0-1 GNAC) and Norwich University (3-1-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) dueled to a 1-1 stalemate in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon. The game was the 2019 GNAC opener for both teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cadets applied plenty of pressure early and the effort paid off in the 22nd minute when Andrew Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) scored off a header near the goalmouth. Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) was credited with an assist on the play.
The visitors' 1-0 edge remained until the 68:24 mark when sophomore Kuma Onyejose (East Greenwich, R.I.) found the back of the net off a well-placed lead pass in the box from senior Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.).
Both teams had opportunities to take the lead in the remaining 40 minutes of play, but neither side was able to take advantage of the chances – including several open-net bids – with the result ending in the 1-1 tie.
TEAM STATS:
Norwich held advantages in shots (15-12) and shots on goal (7-5) while St. Joe's posted an 8-7 edge in corner kicks in the deadlock.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) came up with several big stops in the conference clash and finished the day with six saves while Norwich freshman Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) posted four stops on the afternoon.
