SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.) registered the third brace of his collegiate career to help propel Saint Joseph's College (6-0-2) past Salem State University (4-4-0), 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer contest on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Ward opened the scoring in the 38th minute when he delivered a low shot past Vikings netminder Christopher Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.). Ward connected again off a Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) pass with a shot to the lower right corner in the 71st minute.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's dominated possession from wire to wire and held advantages in shots (11-2), shots on goal (6-1), and corner kicks (5-1) in the triumph.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) turned away the only shot he faced to notch his fourth shutout of the season. Jimenez made four saves in the losing effort.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Saint Joseph's is now 2-1-0 all-time versus Salem State University, a team the Monks defeated by a 1-0 margin at home last fall.
