STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Cole Bishop (Gorham, Maine) scored off a Gavin Lins (Nashua, N.H.) pass in the 52nd minute to lift Saint Joseph's College (2-1-1, 2-0-0 GNAC) past Johnson & Wales University (1-2-1, 1-1-0 GNAC), 1-0, in a hard fought GNAC men's soccer battle at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a scoreless first half the Monks came out of halftime firing and had all the momentum when Bishop found the back of the net 6:54 into the second stanza. Capitalizing on a turnover at midfield, Lins carried the ball to the right side of the box and delivered a crossing pass to Bishop, who flicked a backfooted kick into the bottom right corner for what proved to be the game winner.

SJC junior goalkeeper Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) made the save of the game at the 74:34 mark with a diving stop to his right on an Aidan Bagley (Cumberland, R.I.) free kick from just outside the 18.

TEAM STATS:

Johnson & Wales, the preseason favorite to win the 2023 GNAC Championship, held the lead in shots (14-5), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (3-1) in the setback.

THE KEEPERS:

Foley made eight saves in the shutout performance while his counterpart, JWU graduate Jacob Friedman (Woodland Hills, Calif.), made one stop in a losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 13-9-1 all-time versus Johnson & Wales University, the team that ended the Monks' GNAC regular-season undefeated streak of 57 (53-0-4) games with a 1-0 victory in Providence last fall (9/24/22).
