Monks Topple Eagles, 153-49

BANGOR, ME – Saint Joseph's College defeated Husson University, 153-49, in head-to-head men's swimming action on Saturday afternoon.

The Monks won all 12 events in which they participated and sophomore standout Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) led the way with top finishes in the 200-Free (1:55.71), 100-Fly (58.69) and 200-Breast (2:35.95) events.

Freshman Ian Riddell (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) topped the field in the 50-Free (24.24) and 100-Free (53.74) events and junior Preston Bowden (Biddeford, Maine) won the 50-Back (28.56) and 50-Fly (27.11) races for Saint Joseph's.

Other top performers in the SJC win included junior Chris Cullity (North Reading, Mass.), who won the 1000-Free (11:25.10) and placed second in the 100-Free (57.57), freshman Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.), who won the 50-Breast (30.46) and was the runner-up in the 200-Breast (2:37.40), and junior Stewart Emery (Augusta, Maine), who placed first in the 200-Back (2:14.72) and earned a runner-up finish in the 50-Back (30.17).

Sophomore Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.) placed second in the 200-Free (2:06.30) and 200-Back (2:22.65) and senior Thomas Smith (New Hartford, Conn.) posted a runner-up effort in the 50-Breast (32.33) race.

The 200-Free relay squad of Bowden, Gilvey, Riddell and Johnson worked together to win the event with a new program record time of 1:34.29

Saint Joseph's will compete against Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
