NORTHFIELD, Vt.—The Norwich University women's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal deficit to post a 12-11 win against the Monk of Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
With the win, the Cadets improve to 5-7 overall and 4-5 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Monks to 10-6 overall and 6-3 against league opponents.
Junior Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman Chandler Camlin (Stamford, Conn.) led the offensive attack for the Cadets as they combined for nine goals, led by Fitzpatrick's game-high five goals. Sophomores Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.), Emma Smith (Patterson, N.Y.) and Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.) also scored for the Cadets, while Conroy totaled a game-high three assists.
Anneka Adame scored four goals and dished out two assists for the Monks. Mary Leasure added three goals and an assist, while Macy Pagurko contributed two goals and an assist. Krystal Walsh netted the final Saint Joseph's goal.
Powered by three second-half goals by Fitzpatrick, the Cadets were able to overcome an 8-5 halftime deficit to post a 7-3 scoring advantage en route to the 12-11 win. Norwich trailed for most of the second half until Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) fed Camlin from behind the net to even the score 10-10 with 9:01 to play.
The Cadets took their first lead 48 seconds later as Smith buried a free position shot. Saint Joseph's responded almost a minute-and-a-half later, as Mary Leasure netted her own free position shot to knot the score at 11-11 with 7:33 to play. Fitzpatrick registered the game-winning goal with 4:57 left in the half.
Adame scored all four of her goals in the first half, including three-straight goals in a span of 3:26 to give the Monks a 4-1 lead with 17:01 left to play.
Norwich goaltender Cheyenne Mata-Notel (East Hampton, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves in win, while Saint Joseph's goaltender Haley Nason recorded seven saves. The Cadets held a narrow 28-27 advantage in shots on the afternoon, while the Monks posted a 21-19 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Both teams will advance to the GNAC tournament, which begins on Wednesday, April 24. Playoff seeding will be announced by the league, and all games will be played at the site of the higher seed.
