BRIDGEPORT, CT – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) trumped Albertus Magnus College (0-1), 20-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at the University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon.
The contest counted as the 2014 season-opener for both teams and was the first- ever NCAA varsity contest for Albertus Magnus.
Fourteen different SJC players scored in the victory with sophomore Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) netting a team-high four markers on the afternoon. Cassie Diplock (Augusta, Maine), Macy Pagurko (Augusta, Maine) and Mary Leasure (South Portland, Maine/McAuley) all tallied two goals and an assist while Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) scored a goal with two assists in the triumph.
Junior Chelsea Black (Gorham, Maine), playing in her first NCAA contest after being sidelined with injuries the last two years, added a goal and an assist while Krystal Walsh (Springvale, Maine) and Alison Cyr (Northbridge, Mass.) also landed on the stat sheet with a goal and an assist apiece.
Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H.), Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), Emma Lafrance (Westport, Mass.), Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.), Anneka Adame (San Diego, Calif.) and Mariyah Heath (Wells, Maine) also scored in the one-sided victory.
Sophomore Miranda Jassil (North Branford, Conn.) scored the Falcons' first goal in program history with 6:08 left in the first half of the contest.
Senior Erika Blechert (Durham, Conn.) made 16 stops in goal for the Falcons.
Haley Nason (Saco, Maine) earned the win for Saint Joseph's in net as she started the contest before Elizabeth Giacchino (Melrose, Mass.) took over for her with 10:14 to go in the opening frame. Giacchino made one save but allowed the Falcons' lone goal scored.
Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) also came off the bench for the Monks and was the netminder for the final 15:22 of the second half.
Saint Joseph's plays at Thomas College on Thursday at 4:00 PM while Albertus Magnus is off until Tuesday, March 18th when the Falcons travel to Rivier University for a 3:30 PM start.
