Saint Joseph’s Sacks Norwich, 23-3

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) netted six goals and senior Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) netted four to help Saint Joseph's College (5-1, 2-0 GNAC) wallop Norwich University (1-1, 1-1 GNAC), 23-3, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest on Saturday afternoon.

Leading 5-2 with 20 minutes remaining in the first half, Saint Joseph's rattled off seven unanswered markers and held a comfortable 13-3 lead at intermission. Featuring more of a ball-control style in the second stanza, the Monks recorded just 17 shots in the final frame but managed to convert 10 attempts into goals to account for the 23-3 final.

For Saint Joseph's, nine different players scored at least one goal in the one-sided conference contest, with juniors Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) and Elizabeth Elcock (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) netting three apiece while senior Doe Leckie (Naples, Maine), junior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) each scored a goal in the triumph. Junior Mary Leasure (South Portland, Maine/McAuley) added a goal and four assists while Wilson earned nine draw controls and Gadbois scooped up a game-high seven ground balls on the afternoon.

For the Cadets, Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) scored twice with an assist and Emma Smith (Patterson, N.Y.) potted a marker in the losing effort.

In goal, SJC junior keeper Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) made one save to pick up her fourth win of the season while Irene Okubo (Chicago, Ill.) and Courtney Hudson (Burke, Va.) split time in the cage, totaling 17 saves in the GNAC setback.

The Monks broke the program's single-game records for goals and winning margin in today's victory.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 4-6 all-time versus Norwich University, a team the Monks defeated twice, by a total of five goals, last spring. Ironically, the SJC single-game losing deficit record – 19 goals – came in a 24-5 loss to the Cadets on April 23rd, 2011.

Saint Joseph's is off until next Saturday when the team hosts GNAC-rival Lasell College at 4:30 PM. Norwich hosts Johnson State College at 7:00 PM on Monday.
