BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Brooke Kelleher scored with 2:11 remaining in overtime to give the University of New England a hard-fought 10-9 sudden-victory win over St. Joseph's College of Maine in a non-conference women's lacrosse game played Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28) at the Big Blue Turf.
Jocelyn Davee passed to Kelleher from behind the net, and the junior attack carried the ball in front of the cage from the left side before finding the back of the net.
After roaring back from a five-goal second-half deficit, it appeared as if the Monks had won the game just over a minute into overtime, but an apparent game-winning goal was called back due to an illegal stick.
Kelleher and Davee joined Jolena Lampron as multiple-goal-scorers for the Nor'easters. Davee and Kelleher also recorded a pair of assists, while Korinne Bohunsky set-up a pair of goals.
Elyse Caiazzo led the Monks with two goals and Mary Leasure added two to go with three assists. Kelsey Dumond assisted on three of St. Joe's nine tallies.
Holding a slim 4-3 advantage at halftime, UNE pulled away for a 9-4 cushion with just over 18 minutes left on the clock. The two teams would go scoreless for the next nine minutes before the Monks exploded for five unanswered markers over a stretch of 7:35. Elizabeth Elcock capped St. Joe's comeback, tying the game (9-9) with 1:54 remaining in regulation.
Bohunsky had a match-best seven draw controls for UNE, while Lampron added four and three caused turnovers. Winning goalkeeper Courtney Kendall made 12 saves in 39:12 of playing time. Lauryn Huck stopped five shots in 24:15 of action.
For the Monks, Emma Lafrance and Meghan Williams (6 caused turnovers) each had seven ground balls. Reagan Emerson picked up six. Michelle Cunha recorded six saves in goal.
UNE will host Thomas College for a non-conference match Tuesday (4 p.m.). St. Joe's is idle until next Saturday when it hosts Husson University (1 p.m.) at Deering High School's Memorial Field in Portland.
