Monks Compete in New England DIII Championship

STANDISH, ME – Three members of the Saint Joseph's College indoor track and field team competed in the 2013 NCAA New England DIII Championship on Friday and Saturday.

Sophomores Amber Dostie (Standish, Maine) and Doe Leckie (Naples, Maine) competed in the women's championship, which was hosted by University of Southern Maine, and senior Jack LaFreniere (Alton, N.H.) participated in the men's championship, which was hosted by Bates College.

With an eighth-place finish and one point in the 1000 Meter run, Dostie made history for the first-year program by becoming the first Saint Joseph's track athlete to earn points in the New England Championship.

LaFreniere placed 13th with a 23.21 time in the 200 Meter dash and Leckie posted a program-best 9.12 effort in the preliminary race of the 55 Meter hurdles event.

Tufts University captured the women's championship with 116 team points, seven points ahead of runner-up MIT. Williams College (88.50), Middlebury College (53) and Rhode Island College (44) rounded out the top five participants on the women's side, which featured 23 competing institutions from around the region.

MIT eclipsed the 21-team men's championship field with 118.50 points while Bates College finished as the runner-up with 94 points. Tufts (92), Williams (59) and Bridgewater State University (52) claimed third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.
