The Saint Joseph's Golf team started out the 2005
golf season by winning the University of New England Golf
Invitational at Biddeford Saco Country Club by four strokes. The
Monks edged University of Southern Maine with a team score of 328.
Leading the way for St. Joe's was freshman Matt
Murray (Dexter, ME) who shot a team low 79. Sophomore
Francois Renaud (E. Middlebury, VT) posted a
respectable 80 as well.
St. Joe's then participated in the Bowdoin Invitational at
Brunswick Golf Club. This tournament featured 14 colleges from
around New England. This was a two-day affair in which St. Joe's
finished in sixth place with a two-day team score of 639.
Next up for the Monks was the Thomas Invitational hosted at the
beautiful Samoset Resort and Golf Club in Rockport. Husson College
was too strong in this match as the Monks recieved good rounds from
Renaud and Murray again.
St. Joe's found itself trying to defend their title in the State of
Maine Championship held at Natanis Golf Club in Vassleboro, Maine.
The Monks won the 2004 State of Maine Championship, but could not
defend the title in 2005 finishing a respectable second among a
field of 12 Maine Colleges. Francois Renaud carded
a 77, and he was followed by freshman Andy LeConte
(York, ME) who shot an 81.
Up next was the UMF Invitational held at Belgrade Lakes Country
Club in Belgrade ME. St Joe's again turned in a fine performance
scoring 316 as a team and taking home second place honors again for
the third straight tournament. Renaud,
LeConte, and Murray shot 77, 78,
79 respectively, at this tough golf course.
The Monks then hosted their own tournament, the John Queenan
Memorial, held at nearby Point Sebego Golf and Beach Resort. SJC
finished 4th with a team score of 332. Francois
Renaud was the only bright spot for the Monks, shooting a
season-best 75.
The USM Fall Classic at Sable Oaks Country Club was next up for
Saint Joseph's College golf team. In this two-day tournament, St.
Joe's finished a dissapointing 6th place with Francois
Renaud posting a two-day total of 152, good for 6th
overall in the tournament.
The NEIGA was hosting their 71st annual New England Golf tournament
bringing 45 Division I, II and III schools together for this
two-day tournament. Saint Joe's finished in 30th place with a
second round team score of 324 under some very tough conditions at
The Captain's Course in Hyannis, Mass. Again it was
Francois Renaud leading the way with an 85 the
first day of the tournament. Junior Jeff Peterson
also produced two rounds of 85 or better as the Monks looked to
close out their season.
The final match was hosted by Husson College at Penobscot Valley
Country Club in Bangor. This two-day tournament was reduced to a
one-day event due to rain. Husson College walked away with an easy
victory as the Monks recieved a career best round of 76 from
freshman Matt Murray.
Overall, the golf team had a very successful season. With only one
senior in the top eight the future looks very bright for this young
team.
