Chief Athletics & Recreation Officer Will Rothermel announced in July of 2023 that Don Flanagan was named as the head coach of the Monks' men's and women's golf programs.

Flanagan comes to Saint Joseph's after serving as the head coach of the co-ed varsity golf team at Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, Maine. He ignited tremendous growth within the program and led the Mustangs to Maine State Championship appearances every year as well as a conference crown. Flanagan coached an individual State Champion and multiple top-five finishers as well as a pair of New England Championship qualifiers during his time at Monmouth Academy.

Coach Flanagan is no stranger to the Monks' golf program as his son, Trevor, donned the Royal Blue for four years as a standout golfer at St. Joe's. The younger Flanagan helped guide the Monks to consecutive GNAC Championships (2021, 2022) and, as a senior team captain, claimed four Medalist titles, was picked as the conference golfer of the week three times, claimed All-Conference honors, and was selected as the College's 2023 Senior Male Athlete of the Year.

"I am fired up to join the Monks' golf program," says Coach Flanagan. "I am looking to continue the winning tradition and build upon the previous accomplishments of past coaches and players. Ultimately I am hoping to set up our student/athletes for success in the classroom, on the golf course and in life."

Aside from leading the golf program, Flanagan also served in multiple coaching capacities at Monmouth Academy, including stints as an assistant coach for the middle school girls' basketball, varsity boys' basketball and baseball teams and as the head coach of the middle school girls' basketball 'B' and girls varsity basketball teams (interim, summer program).

"We are absolutely thrilled to have Don joining our athletics department to lead the men's and women's golf programs," adds Rothermel. "He has a great passion for Saint Joseph's and a great approach to coaching and the game of golf.  He is just the person to continue our upward trajectory on the men's side while also getting the women's program launched."

Flanagan is currently the Battalion Chief and a Paramedic for the Auburn Fire Department, a station where he has served since 1995. He has also worked in several capacities for the Maine Fire Service Institute at Southern Maine Community College since 1995.

Flanagan attended Colby College, where he played basketball and baseball, for two years before obtaining associate degrees in Fire Science and Paramedicine at SMCC in 1998 and 2005, respectively.
