Monks Finish in Tie for Sixth at Maine State Championship

CUMBERLAND, ME – Saint Joseph's College finished in a tie for sixth with 657 team strokes in the 2011 State of Maine Championship Golf Tournament at Val Halla Golf Course over the weekend. First-year golfer Steve Simonds (Steep Falls, Maine) paced the Monks with a 160 (79-81) card and finished in a tie for 15th out of 55 participants in the two-day event.

Husson University captured State Championship honors for the ninth time in the last 13 years with a 600 (295-305) team card, well ahead of runner-up Bowdoin College which reported a 636 (312-324) score. All five of the Eagles' golfers carded a score lower than 160 with two linkers – David DuBois and Matthew Loubier – recording 150 cards in the annual state tourney.

Bowdoin's Bobby Kaminski garnered medalist honors with a 147 (72-75) card, three strokes better than the aforementioned Husson players. Kaminski is the first Polar Bears linker to register top individual honors at the state tournament since Ryan Blossom carded a 151 in the 2007 championship.

For St. Joe's, Jeff Hilton '13 (Limington, Maine) shot a 165 (83-82), Ebb Walton '12 (Blue Hill, Maine) carded a 166 (83-83), Kevin Richardson '14 (Coventry, Conn.) registered a 169 (83-86), and T.J. Garske '12 (Federal Way, Wash.) posted a 171 (88-83).

The Monks will return to the links on Tuesday when the team hosts the John Queenan Memorial at Point Sebago Golf Resort in Casco at 11:00 AM.
