Saint Joseph’s to Add Women’s Golf as 22nd Varsity Program

STANDISH, Maine - Saint Joseph's College Director of Athletics Will Sanborn '86 has announced that the institution will add women's golf as its newest varsity program. The team is expected to play a full schedule during the 2021 fall semester.

Head Coach Jason Riley '16, who has skippered the Monks' men's golf program for the last two years, started the initiative to add women's golf and will serve as the head coach for both programs. An assistant coach will be added to his staff to help juggle the demands of running two teams.

Saint Joseph's will be one of just four colleges in the State of Maine to sponsor women's golf as the Monks join Bates College, Bowdoin College, and Husson University on the select list. St. Joe's will be one of only 12 New England region institutions to have a women's golf program when the team kicks off play in September.

"I'm very excited to start the women's program," adds Coach Riley. "It's another avenue to continue growing the game of golf and providing an opportunity for women at the collegiate level. I look forward to working with these student-athletes and to continue building on our championship culture."

The women's team will practice, along with the men's side, at Point Sebago in Casco, Maine and work on their game during the offseason using the program's new Flightscope Mevo+ launch monitor and hitting net.

The addition of women's golf marks the first time since the summer of 2018 that the college has added a new varsity sports program. That year, St. Joe's introduced men's and women's alpine skiing as varsity programs.

"We are excited to announce to our community that we are adding Women's Golf as our newest varsity program," adds Sanborn. "The addition of this team demonstrates the continued support of President Dlugos and Saint Joseph's leadership to the growth and development of Monks Athletics and our students. We look forward to Saint Joseph's Women's Golf becoming an important part of our championship culture."

The addition of the women's golf program brings the total number of athletic teams at Saint Joseph's to 22 (10 men, 12 women). Currently, the list of SJC women's varsity sports include alpine skiing, basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball while the men's docket includes alpine skiing, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and indoor and outdoor track & field.
