Monks Place Fifth at Bates College

LEWISTON, ME – The Saint Joseph's men's track & field team placed fifth out of six teams with 16 points in the Bates College Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, freshman Sam Dunay became the first SJC athlete to compete in a heptathlon event. The first-year runner placed eighth in the 60 meter dash (7.89), ninth in the long jump (4.86m), seventh in the shot put (8.90m), ninth in the high jump (1.58m), seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (9.55) and seventh in the 1000 meter run (3.17.26). He did not score in the pole vault and placed just two points out of ninth place with 2951 points.

On Saturday, senior Jack LaFreniere (Alton, N.H.) was just .02 seconds off the pace with a runner-up effort in the 200 meter dash (23.20) and finished sixth in the 60 meter dash (7.34) and junior Faisal Abdillahi (Lewiston, Maine) ran to a fourth-place finish in the 1000 meter run (2:40.39).

Freshman Billy Brooks (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was ninth in the 400 meter dash (58.10) and first-year Connor Dufour (Augusta, Maine) placed ninth in the 600 meter run (1:31.83) for the Monks.

University of Maine won the event with 239.50 points while Bates College finished second with 193 points. Southern Maine (120.50), Colby College (86) and Bowdoin College (3) also competed in the meet.

Saint Joseph's will compete at University of Southern Maine next Saturday starting at 1:00 PM.
