Monks Drop Two at Babson Trimatch

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College women's volleyball team powered its way to a pair of victories on Saturday, as the Beavers celebrated their annual Back To Babson Weekend with a 3-1 win over Newbury College and a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's College of Maine. Between Babson victories, Newbury defeated St. Joseph's by a score of 3-0.


Newbury received 14 kills from sophomore Sandra Karalekas (East Longmeadow, Mass.) as the Nighthawks posted a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's. Newbury first-year Amy Chen (Chelmsford, Mass.) tossed in seven aces and sophomore Sarah Nelson (Bernardston, Mass.) added 29 assists. Sophomore Monique Lajoie (Nashua, N.H.) paced St. Joseph's with five kills and 17 digs, sophomore Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, N.H.) also recorded five kills, and first-year Mary Hoyt (Rochester, Mass.) chipped in with 17 digs and 10 service aces.

In the final match of the day, Babson used eight kills and eight aces from O'Neill and seven kills from senior captain Mandi Blackmer (Honeoye, N.Y.) to tally a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's. Glassner contributed five aces and 25 assists in the victory, while first-year Kathyrn Alea (Southborough, Mass.) added seven digs. Hoyt led the Monks with 13 digs, Gowen dished out 11 assists, and Lajoie notched seven kills.
