Standish, ME - The SJC volleyball squad hosted Emerson College and Daniel Webster College in a GNAC tri-match on Saturday. Despite dropping both matches, the Monks showed real improvement and continued to make strides.
Emerson 3, SJC 0
In the 11:00 AM match, St. Joe's fell to Emerson 3-0. The Lions
utilized their size and took the first game 30-19. After jumping
out to a quick 5-0 lead in game two, the Emerson team was tested by
the aggressive play of SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth,
NH) and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) before
taking a 30-26 win.
The Monks took an early lead in game three behind SO Amanda
Ruel's (Biddeford, ME) serve and the great defensive play
of Gowan and FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH). The
Lions responded taking a 14-10 lead and closed out the match
30-21.
St. Joe's was led by Lajoie (8 kills, 14 digs and 3 service aces),
Gowan (13 assists, 3 digs) and Hoyt (5 kills, 11 digs and 2 service
aces).
Daniel Webster 3, SJC 0
Daniel Webster defeated the Monks 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-16) in the
final match of the day. The teams battled in the first two games
but the Eagles pulled away in game three.
St. Joe's had big contributions from Gowan (18 assists, 5 digs, and
2 kills), Lajoie (24 digs, 9 kills) and Hoyt (16 digs, 6 kills, 4
service aces).
SR captain Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) chipped in
with 5 kills and 5 digs.
