Standish, ME - Visiting Suffolk University picked up a 3-1
volleyball win over the Monks on Sunday. Saint Joseph's College
stands at 2-11 overall and 0-5 GNAC.
St. Joe's jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game one and stayed on top
12-6 thanks to several great sets by SO Marcie
Gowan (Plymouth, NH) and kills by SO Monique
Lajoie (Nashua, NH). Suffolk fought back behind the strong
play of Noel Moran and Aly Brain and took game one 30-24.
Game two was highlighted by several lead changes as the Monks were
fueled by the strong play of FY Mary Hoyt
(Rochester, NH) and FY Rachel Bassett
(Narragansett, RI). The Rams took a 26-16 lead and despite 5
consecutive points from Lajoie's serve were still able to earn a
30-22 win.
The Monks put the pressure on in game after some great sets by
Gowan. St. Joe's held a slim 18-16 lead but the teams battled and
tied the score at 26. Key serves by JR Amanda Ruel
(Biddeford, ME) helped St. Joe's take a 30-26 win.
Suffolk got off to a strong start in game four and held a 20-14 and
proved too strong taking the final game 30-17 to close out the
match.
St. Joe's was led by Lajoie (11 kills, 20 digs, 3 service aces),
Gowen (20 assists, 11 digs) and Hoyt (6 kills, 27 digs).
The Monks host Maine-Farmington on Wednesday, September 26th at 7
PM.
