GRAY, Maine - A single-elimination high school girls beach volleyball tournament is being held on Wednesday, August 12, with teams and players from Biddeford, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Gorham, Greely, Lewiston, Thornton Academy, and Yarmouth competing. Matches will be determined in a best of three set.

Twenty-four teams started the popular summer league in early June, and the tournament caps off an exciting and competitive season of volleyball in the sand.

Each team of the top16 teams has been seeded based on their league standing and results and ranked 1-8 and placed in one of two divisions.

According to tournament director, John Razsa, of Hunts Hill Volleyball, "This league and the season-ending tournament can be seen as a landmark in the growth of this up-and-coming sport in Maine."

"Beach Volleyball has been an Olympic event of great interest recently, with the United States men's and women's teams winning gold medals at last year's Olympics in Beijing," said Razsa.

In addition to being popular on the beaches of this country and others around the world, beach volleyball is also becoming an NCAA sanctioned collegiate sport as well. "Its attraction is not being missed by high school players in southern Maine, New England and throughout the U.S.," said Razsa.

The tournament, which is being held on three sand volleyball courts constructed next to the Newbegin Gym, at 22 Main Street, in Gray, starts at 10 a.m. and concludes with the championship match at approximately 4 p.m. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

The tournament is hosted by Hunts Hill Volleyball and the Gray Parks and Recreation Department.
